Topic – The Faithfulness of a Christ-Centred Church
Text – Revelation 2:8-11; Psalms 103:20,21; John 15:18,19; 17:14
This is a great deep book and revelation of God, and contains all we need to get to heaven, salvation, sanctification, holiness and the grace of God.
This is an epistle, a letter, a word of comfort, commendation to the church at Smyrna. This city is in Turkey, name changed in 1930 as Izmir. Here the Lord is sending a word with a past reference, present application and future recommendation. that we need to learn a lesson
1. Primary Application – revelation 2:8
This is for the church in Smyrna, one of the churches in Asia
2. Present Admonition – Revelations 2:11
A teaching, encouragement and exhortation for you. He that has an ear to hear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying unto the churches.
3. Prophetic Anticipation – Revelations 2:11b
The second death is the death of death. D2 That death is death is out out of function and activity.
Thank God I am an Overcomer. Overcoming the devil, trials, temptation an sin.
Christ speaks to every minister and member in the church.
The angel is the leader and pastor of that church. God expects every minister to be like an angel. The minister is to excel in strength in times of trials, persecution and testing. And that we obey His commandments, hearken to the voice and word of God.
So the ministers are expected to be;
1. Saved, born again. having strength to overcome temptations
2. Holy, separated from the world. He is to be different and keeps himself unspotted from the world
3. Obedient to the Lord, promptly, not delay, with pleasure, and unquestionable to the word of God. Delight, rejoice and love the Lord
4. Faithful to God in all things.
And the members are suppose to follow these ministers of the Lord, their leaders and pastors as the angel of the Lord.
The Church is an assembly of called out people. Called out of sin, out of the evil society. Those who are cleansed, chosen and called out of the world. This is the church that is alive, not a dead church. Hope you are not a pastor over a dead church. Their lifestyles, pursuits are different from the world, they do not participate in the evil associations and practices of the world. They are true to the living God because they are children of God.
At this time John was writing to them, he was also suffering persecution. History tells us that the Caesar a that time wanted to be worshipped as god, but he left out the Jewish people, but the native Jews reported the Christians to the Romans that these Christians are not Jewish people, so they were persecuted severally by the Romans, they were denied by many things because they didn’t have the certificate of release given by the government to those who worshipped the image of Caesar.
This church in Symrna was Christ centred, and that is the kind of Church that the Lord wants us to raise and worship in. With the doctrines, goal and teachings on Christ. So you need to examine where you worship
Point 1. The Perception of our Faultless Christ
Christ introduced Himself in a wonderful way.
1. He is the First and the Last – Revelations 1:8; 22:13,16;
Anything you mention, He is the First, always be there. He is the Eternal Son of God. Before the world was, He was there, and after the world is over, He will be still be there. And He is my Lord and Saviour. He has been before Lucifer, Satan, and the world. He will take care of you. My Saviour is Almighty, All Sufficient, All Powerful, and cannot fail.
2. Which was Dead and Alive – Revelations 2:8b; 1 Corinthians 15:3,4; Hebrews 7:25
He rose from the dead. He is alive again. He died for our sins, paid the price for our sin penalty. That was why He died for your sins. He rose again so that He will preserve and gives you the victory. I have the victory and justification.
He always makes intercession for me, and He will always answer your prayers, because He is praying for you, and you will strong in Jesus Name.
3. I knows – Revelations 2:9
He knows every little thing that borders me. I don’t need to give God information. He knows my situation.
4. I know thy poverty – Revelations 2:9; James 2:5; 1 Corinthians 15:10; 1 Timothy 1:14; 2 Peter 1:3,4,8; 2 Corinthians 9:8; 1 Timothy 6:18
They were poor in local currency but rich in foreign currency. They were rich in currency that can get anything from heaven. Faith will get any miracle from God, quench all the firing darts of the wicked, and will get healing and deliverance. When you don’t have the local currency, switch on to the heavenly currency and you will get anything from God. Be rich in grace, faith and love. And you don’t have any problem.
You are poor in the natural but rich in the supernatural, poor in the local but you are rich in the heavenly, then you are rich in faith, rich in love, rich in grace, and you are rich in heavenly virtues.
He has given us all things.
I know that I am rich. And I will have additions in my life.
Accept it, it will so and be fulfilled. You are rich.
That barrel of oil will not fail, until the recession is out of the land. The Lord will feed me, and recession all never take over my life.
Be rich in good works, and I will do good, even in this recession.
5. He knows the hearts of the people – Revelations 2:9; John 2:23,24
The Lord knows the heart of everyone. If you are serving the Lord, be faithful to the Lord, He knows your heart. And thank God He knows us. And He knows the Hypocrites as well.
Point 2. The Perseverance of a Faithful Church
Revelations 2:10; John 16:33
Here is a church in Smyrna that went through persecutions, oppression, suppressions and oppositions. Yet, they were faithful.
10 days is a short time.
Tribulation here means persecution. The Lord wants us to know how to conduct ourselves in persecutions. That is not the time tp hang your head, don’t look sorrowful as if all is gone. When you do this;
1. You are forgotten what Jesus said. Be joyful, hilarious in persecution, laugh at the devil. Don’t weep, nor complain, nor grind in persecution. I will never make the devil happy. I rejoice in trials and persecutions.
I am unstoppable, unconquerable, unbeatable, unbendable.
When they say I am poor, remember what Jesus said, I am rich. He will provide for all your needs. The resources are still for you, and your faith in God will not be disappointed in Jesus Name. You will find out this week.
Blasmphemed by mortal men, but praised by the Almighty God. Heaven do not recognise all the comments that the world and the devil are passing about me. I am not to listen to them, because Jesus said that I am aright in the grace of the Lord, in the evaluation of heaven and under the blood of Jesus, I am aright.
1. Fear none – My GOD is nearer to me than that terrible man – Jeremiah 15:21; 31:11
I am not afraid. The Lord will deliver me from the hand of Mr Terrible. I serve the One Who has conquered death, evil spirits, devil and every thing. You don’t fear even persecution. Jesus has taken the sharp head of that sword away. The shadow of a lion or death cannot do anything. I will fear no evil. The Lord is my Shepherd.
We are the people of God, the conquerors, we have overcome already.
2. Suffer for 10 days. Just for a short time – Genesis 24:55
The Lord Who has kept you all these 4 or 9 days, you are almost through, you will see the light at the end of tunnel. He will hold your hands till the vey end. 10 days are short period, a brief moment of time, and everything will be over. This is the worst time anybody can give up, you are so near the victory line, the coming of the Lord, and your rewards, so fear not, don’t give up. Stay strong!
Point 3. The Preservation of Fearless Christians
1. The Promise – I will give – Revelations 2:28; 21:6
A lot is waiting for you at the end of your finishing end. He will give me something that others will not be able to get from me in Jesus Name. Water of life is freely available for me today.
2. The Prize – Revelations 2:10; 2 Timothy 4:7,8; James 1:12
He will give me a crown of life. I shall wear a crown. So I should be expectant and look forward to this day of my crowning. I am looking at my future and destiny, and I shall wear a crown in Jesus Name.
3. The Power – that conquers – Revelations 2:11; 1 John 2:14; 4:4; 5:4,5,18
I will overcome. How do we overcome? By the power of our faith – 1 John 2:14. If the word of God abides in us, I am going to overcome the wicked one in Jesus Name.
Washed in the blood of the Lamb, and surrounded by a wall of fire, and he dwell by the glory of God, the wicked one dear not touch you.
4. The Preservation – Revelations 2:11; 21:5-7; Romans 8:37
I shall not be hurt by the second death. Hell fire, punishment eternal will not touch my life, joy and glory forever
I am an overcomer, and something glorious is coming to me today in Jesus Name.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (Romans 8:37)
Ponder on this! You are poor in the natural but rich in the supernatural, poor in the local but you are rich in the heavenly, then you are rich in faith, rich in love, rich in grace, and you are rich in heavenly virtues. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.
